What's Box Lacrosse?

Box lacrosse can help players develop better stick skills, footwork, hand-eye coordination, physicality, conditioning and mental toughness, all of which are important skills for field lacrosse. By playing both versions of the sport, players can develop a more well-rounded skillset and become better all-around lacrosse players.

THe Positional Benefits of box lacrosse for...

Iroquois-Defeat-USA-6

ATTACK & MIDFIELDERS:

Box lacrosse offers numerous advantages for both attack and midfield players, enhancing their skills and strategic prowess on the field. The confined space of the box demands quicker decision-making, sharper reflexes, and improved stick handling, enabling attackers to navigate tight defenses with finesse. Midfielders benefit from the fast-paced nature of box lacrosse, as it hones their ability to transition seamlessly between offense and defense. The reduced field size promotes increased physicality, helping players develop a more robust playing style. Additionally, the constant engagement in box lacrosse ensures that attackers and midfielders refine their shooting accuracy and learn to exploit smaller goal areas, translating to heightened goal-scoring proficiency in traditional outdoor lacrosse.

DEFENSEMEN:

The smaller playing area in box lacrosse hones defensive players' agility, positioning, and stick checks, fostering a more well-rounded skill set. Additionally, the constant action and increased number of touches in box lacrosse contribute to improved stick handling and defensive awareness, translating seamlessly to the outdoor game. By participating in box lacrosse, defensemen can develop a heightened sense of anticipation, strategic thinking, and physicality, ultimately elevating their performance on the field and making them more formidable opponents.

FACEOFF (FOGO) PLAYERS:

The tight quarters demand quick decision-making, enhanced stick skills, and heightened situational awareness – attributes that seamlessly translate to success in face-offs. The box format also fosters a physical style of play, allowing FOGO athletes to develop resilience and strength in contested situations. Moreover, the constant action in box lacrosse ensures that FOGO players are consistently refining their reflexes and agility. Overall, embracing box lacrosse as part of training not only amplifies a face-off player's skill set but also contributes to an all-encompassing proficiency on the field, making them a formidable force during face-offs and throughout the game.

GOALIES:

Box lacrosse goalies develop lightning-fast reactions, refined stick skills, and a heightened understanding of offensive strategies, positioning them as formidable forces on the field. The constant action in the box fosters an environment where goalies learn to adapt to rapid changes, making them more versatile and resilient. Additionally, the smaller goals in box lacrosse sharpen a goalie's accuracy and shot-stopping abilities, ensuring they are well-equipped to face any challenge on the lacrosse field.

What do people say about box lacrosse?

One of the biggest benefits of playing box for a young lacrosse player is in the development of lacrosse IQ.  Because everyone plays with a short stick [in box lacrosse], you have to focus on being a complete lacrosse player versus specializing as an attackman or d-man. That is how your IQ grows and skills improve.

Peter Lawrence
Former University of Hartford Head Coach

Being a part of the finesse and physicality of box lacrosse has been a great experience for me. I feel that I have learned and improved as an overall lacrosse player. Learning to adapt in tight space while reading defenders and offensive players has been the biggest improvement in my game.

Paul Rabil
NLL & PLL All Star, NCAA All American

American field players would really help themselves if they were exposed to a steady stream of box experience. Box lacrosse is an extremely valuable background for a young player, we need to incorporate more of the indoor skills in to the field game. It is almost a requirement to have a top player with indoor experience on your roster right now.

Dom Starsia
Former University of Virginia Head Coach

I believe that box lacrosse gives young people many more opportunities to excel in our game.  If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of twelve play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time.  The number of touches of the ball and the ability to develop better stick skills in a game of box lacrosse, far surpasses what happens to young people on a 110 x 60 yard field.  Learning how to pass and catch in traffic, understanding how to shoot, and developing a sense of physicality are all positive traits developed by the box game

Bill Tierney
US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Former Denver University Head Coach
